The Southwestern Sun, a print dynamo, abandoned its online publication about the time of the pandemic interruption. Long a leader in quality journalism in the state, the Sun has instead clung to print only with promises to return online soon.

Its otherwise vacated site still drew 19.5k visitors each month.

It started with urban fires in Southern California, transitioned to the Donald Trump inauguration, and was followed by Trump Administration chaos (attack on immigrants, attack on DEI, introduction of DOGE, attack on law firms, attack on major universities, the abduction and deportation first of alleged terrorists and then on immigrants and possibly citizens, and the revocation of international student visas). Fall 2024 By Rich Cameron Built on the backbone of election coverage, 53 California community college publications saw a healthy 8.3 percent increase of story posts for Fall 2024 over the same period last year. The 53 publications posted 4,175 stories from Aug. 1 through Dec. 31. The semester got off to a slow start, but picked up by late October as election stories led the way. (Election stories accounted for nearly 10 percent of all stories for the semester.) It appears that 15 publications (28.3 percent) saw downturns of 10 percent or more for the semester, but 27 of the remaining publications saw healthy increase to raise the state total. One print publication still does not have a publication website. Another without a website last fall (Southwestern) got one, but barely used it. East LA started the semester with a site sideline by malware, but got back on track by October. Two publications that posted last spring --Monterey Peninsula and Moreno Valley-- were dormant this semester...

  Fall 2023 Online Elsewhere Report   Has California community college journalism returned to normal from the pandemic? Not quite. Instead, a new normal is setting in.  ·        In-person classes are back, but ·        Online courses are a permanent part of the new landscape. ·        Many publications have abandoned or severely cut back on print. ·        Online publications, which clearly draw more eyeballs that their print cousins (admittedly to a different demographic), are a major part of all but two programs across the state, though ·        Hanging on to a dream of print hinders program growth at many schools, and ·        While many programs are embracing online publication good practices, others still suffer from print mindsets, especially with posting patterns and story presentation. ·...
