San Francisco (Spring 2023)
San Francisco Guardsman
Some of the most interesting campus relations stories –for example see “39 Months of Purgatory: Will City College rehire laid off faculty in impacted departments?”— came from the San Francisco Guardsman, which made it more sad that the online site took a clear back seat to print. With a meager 7.5 percent of possible posting days (least in the state) used, the publication would go dormant for weeks on end and then populated with past print stories in bulk. For some reason it was also the slowest-loading site in the state.
The Guardsman posted just 51 stories this spring, its lowest output except for Spring 2022. Story types are among the most balanced in the state: News 25.5 percent, opinion 25.5 percent, sports 29.4 percent, and features 19.6 percent.
While 72.5 percent of stories were campus focused, the Guardsman also looked to its city/county for news 21.6 percent of the time. The community focus was eighth highest in the state. With 29.4 percent devoted to campus sports, it ranked sixth.
And its 15.7 percent of campus opinion stories ranked highest in the state.
Bulk postings saw nearly half of stories posted on weekends, mostly in the evenings (58.5 percent).
The site drew 23.8k visitors each month.
