San Diego Mesa (Spring 2023)

San Diego Mesa Press

The San Diego Mesa Press published 77 stories this spring. While below state average, it marked one of the few publications to have climbed back to its pre-pandemic/remote instruction numbers.

The spread of story types was more balanced than most publications. While news led with 41.6 percent, opinion (26.0 percent) and sports (20.8 percent) were reasonably balanced. Feature stories accounted for the remaining 11.7 percent. This represents an uptick in news and sports and a shift downward in feature stories. A key story on campus this semester was a switch in email address usage.

While campus stories dominate, general or “neither” stories still accounted for more than a quarter (28.6 percent) of all stories, ninth most in the state.

The publication’s 26.0 percent of opinion stories was second highest, but only two opinion stories were campus related. The publication had only two campus governance stories.

A quarter (24.7 percent) of all stories were posted on Tuesday, but the remaining three-quarters were fairly evenly spread over other days, including weekends. Almost half of stories (46.8 percent) were posted in the afternoon. Postings were made a healthy 44.8 percent of possible days, 13th highest.

The site drew 32.2k visitors each month, sixth highest in the state.
