San Diego City (Spring 2023

San Diego City Times

The San Diego City Times stood out for its variety of story forms as it tried to incorporate its television broadcast news efforts into the publication. It was second in use of multimedia stories (n. 25), including 20 video stories, some even included transcripts. And it was one of only a couple publications that occasionally incorporated Spanish language stories.

It published a total of 103 stories with a 5.2 story-per-week average. The 103 stories were up from previous semesters and were the most the publication posted in this study except for the remote semester of Spring 2021, where it published double that number.

Heavy on campus focus, it ranked fourth highest in percentage (91.3 percent) of stories focused on campus. News format was its most familiar format; its 67 percent news stories ranked third highest in the state. Since most of its content was campus focused, it was also third in campus news (62.1 percent).

It had no opinion stories, much less campus opinion stories, and had just five campus sports stories, though campus sports were incorporated in television newscast packages. Its 11 campus governance stories tied for 10thmost.

It had the 10th highest percentage of possible posting days, posting just under half (47.1 percent). Wednesdays (28.2 percent) and Thursdays (26.2 percent) were the most popular posting days and six in 10 stories (59.8 percent) were posted in the evening.

The City Times drew 24.6k visitors each month.
