Orange Coast Report

Is the Orange Coast Report a news-paper or is it a sports-paper? One thing for sure is that it is one of a small handful of publications that covers campus news almost as much as it does campus news. One third of its 185 stories (36.8 percent) —fourth most in the state— were campus news stories and a nearly identical third (34.6 percent) were campus sports stories. The publication was fourth overall in all sports coverage, third in percentage of campus sports stories, and first in total campus sports stories.

It was strong in campus opinion stories (7.0 percent, 10th). Its 13 campus opinion stories were tied for second most in the state. And its 12 campus governance stories were tied for eighth most.

When publications are part of a multicampus district and the other campuses do not have a student publication or then they must sometimes cover the other campuses. But rarely do they get the blowback the Coast Report did. The publication’s response to the blowback was found in its “Their story is our story” editorial.

The Coast Report was proficient in posting stories; it posted 73.6 percent of possible days over its 20-week publishing window, the highest percentage in the state. Because of timely sports stories, three in 10 stories (30.8 percent) were posted on weekends. The Coast Report’s website does not support a standard RSS feed, so measuring time of day of posts was not possible.

The site drew 25.8k visitors each month, 10th best in the state.
