Los Medanos (Spring 2023)
Los Medanos Experience
The Los Medanos Experience published 175 stories this spring, sixth most in the state. Its 10.9 stories per week average was fourth best.
It had a lot of opinion stories (highest percentage with 28.6 percent), but they were not always campus opinions. The publication’s high reliance on movie and music reviews contributed to three in 10 stories (30.9 percent) having neither a campus focus nor a community focus. It ranked sixth highest in “neither” stories. Its seven campus opinion stories were 10th most.
When it focused on campus it most likely was with sports stories. It had nearly as many campus sports stories (n. 44) as it did campus news stories (n. 50). And its 10 campus governance stories were tied for 12th most.
Aside from its heavy reliance on critical reviews, it was stronger than most publications in use of LGBTQ+ related stories. Another distinction was that it is one of the few to regularly post editorial cartoons on its site.
Nearly half (49.7 percent) of its stories were posted on Thursday afternoons (51.7 percent). Its posting practice suggested a print mindset, with lots of “excessive post” days, despite posting an average of two-plus times a week (33.3 percent of possible days).
The site drew 26.5k viewers per month, 12th best in the state.
