Laney (Spring 2023)
Laney Citizen
The Laney Citizen published 35 stories this spring, the exact number as Spring 2022, but well below Spring 2021 when remote instruction resulted in well over 100 stories.
The Citizen focused heavily on campus stories (94.3 percent, third in the state) and most stories were news stories (80.0 percent, first). In fact, it was first in campus news stories (77.1 percent, first). Many of those stories focused around the college’s board of trustees (17 campus governance stories, fourth in the state) and other watchdog style stories. Examples included “Peralta District Custodian staffing Levels fall short of industry guidelines,” and “District Attorney’s Office Recuses Itself From Thomas Case.”
The Citizen had just one opinion story, an opinion feature exploring students’ views on class modality. It had no sports stories.
Nearly a third of stories (31.4 percent) were posted on Wednesdays and third each were posted in mornings (33.3 percent) and afternoons (33.3 percent). The publication drew an average of 11.1k visitors each month.
