East Los Angeles (Spring 2023)

East Los Angeles Campus News

The East Los Angeles Campus News was a workhorse publication that produced 136 stories this semester, 10thmost in the state; its 8.5 stories per week average was ninth most. Four in five stories (79.4 percent) are campus focused.

The Campus News has long been one of the highest producing publications in the state and still puts great emphasis on its print edition, which was evidenced in its posting pattern of just 15 posting days (17.9 percent of possible days) for the semester. A look at its chart showed regular gaps in online postings with excessive post days every couple of weeks. The online site could benefit from an online-centric pattern more than its current print-centric pattern.

The site averaged 17.9k visitors a month, 24th in the state; one wonders if it could build a larger online readership with a more regular posting pattern. The vast majority (79.4 percent) of its posts came on Wednesdays every couple of weeks and three-fourths (78.6 percent) were in the afternoon; the rest came in the evenings.

A staple in coverage includes movie and stage reviews/features, it also covered mental health stories more than other publications. It ranked in the top third in campus sports stories.

A standout story from the semester was “First generation Latino students struggle financially.”
