Citrus (Spring 2023)

Citrus Clarion

The Citrus Clarion published 65 stories for the semester, its lowest output since the study began. Four out of five stories (81.5 percent) are campus based (16 in the state).

A distinction with the Clarion is that many of its community-based stories were a tournament-style competition for the best chicken nuggets available, its second version of chicken wars. In fact, Citrus talked about food and drink more than many other publications and one its innovative stories was its “Students frustrated by on-campus vending machines story.

Just over half (50.8 percent) of its stories were news stories and nearly a third (30.8 percent) were feature stories. It was low on sports stories (just 7.7 percent, its lowest since sports came back from the pandemic).

The publication was relatively strong in campus governance coverage (10 stories, which was tied for 12th in the state), but had just five campus sports stories, or about one a month. Its four campus opinion stories were tied for 16th in the state.

It spread its posts out among Mondays (27.7 percent), Wednesdays (24.6 percent), and weekends (23.1 percent). Close to half (46.2 percent) of its stories were posted in the afternoon. It posts, on average, just under twice a week (26.2 percent).

The site saw 13.4k visitors each month.
