Canyons (Spring 2023)
College of the Canyons News
The Canyons News was one of the most distinctive online publications in the state because of its use of video components to nearly every story. It far outpaced other publications in the state in use of multimedia. But also distinctive was the fact that nearly every video story had an actual written story accompanying it.
The site was added to the study this semester, so there are no previous semester numbers to compare.
There were 78 stories for the semester and 72 had videos attached. Also distinctive was that the publication placed a high priority in covering community-based stories (61.5 percent). It was strong on news stories and its 57.7 percent news stories was ninth in the state.
No stories were categorized as opinion and none were recorded as covering campus governance.
Despite clearly being an online publication with its used of multimedia, it posted on fewer than 10 percent of its possible posting days (9.9 percent), indicating that the publication is run much like a print publication. All but one story was posted on a Wednesday and all but one in the evening.
The site was near the bottom of the state in site visitors (4.4k for 47th).
